BSR (Best Sellers Rank) is Amazon's hourly-updated rank of every product against all others in its top-level store. For KDP coloring books, BSR sits in the Books store and approximates how recently a book sold. Lower number means more recent sales. BSR of 100,000 in Books equals roughly 2 to 3 sales per day.
What is BSR?
BSR is the Best Sellers Rank, Amazon's hourly-updated ranking number that approximates how recently a product sold relative to every other product in the same top-level store. A coloring book with BSR 50,000 in the Books store has sold more recently than a book with BSR 500,000.
How is BSR calculated?
Amazon does not publish the exact formula. The known pattern is that recent sales weigh most, prior sales contribute a decaying tail, and BSR refreshes hourly. A single sale will move a book's BSR sharply for a few hours, then it drifts back as other books sell.
What BSR should a new KDP coloring book target?
A coloring book with BSR under 100,000 in Books sells roughly 2 to 3 copies per day. Under 50,000 sells 4 to 8 per day. Under 20,000 sells 10+ per day. Most published KDP coloring books never break BSR 500,000; the books that hit five-figure ranks have either strong niches, real marketing, or both.
Why does BSR matter for niche research?
BSR is the public signal of demand. A niche where the top 10 books all sit in BSR 30,000 to 80,000 means real, sustained sales exist. A niche where the top books are in BSR 800,000+ means the demand is thin even at the top. Use BSR ranges across competing titles, not single-book BSR, to evaluate a niche.
