To make a coloring book on Canva for Amazon KDP, create a custom design at your exact trim size, such as 8.5 x 11 inches, place one coloring page per page with a blank page after each, keep the art 0.25 inch from the edges, and download as PDF Print with the "Crop marks and bleed" box left unticked. KDP rejects files with crop marks [4].
That checkbox is where most Canva coloring books fail, and it's not the only Canva default that doesn't match KDP. This guide gives you the page sizes in a table, the layout steps, and the exact download settings, so the file passes on the first upload.
TL;DR:
- Use a custom size equal to your trim, and keep the art inside the margins so you don't need bleed. Canva's bleed adds 0.125 inch to all 4 sides [1], but a KDP interior adds it to the width only once [5], so the two don't match.
- Put a blank page behind every design. KDP allows up to 4 blank pages in a row mid-book [4], so alternating design and blank pages is fine.
- Download as PDF Print, which is 300 dpi. PDF Standard is 96 dpi [2].
- Leave "Crop marks and bleed" unticked. KDP says files "should not contain crop marks" and "printer's marks should be disabled" [4].

What page size should a Canva coloring book be?
Set a custom size in inches that matches your trim size exactly: 8.5 x 11 for a standard letter-size coloring book, or 8.5 x 8.5 for a square one. If your art stays inside white margins, which it does on almost every coloring page, you don't need bleed at all, and the custom size is the whole setup.
Bleed is where Canva and KDP disagree. Canva adds "0.125 inches (3.175 mm) on all sides" and says the size is fixed and can't be adjusted [1]. KDP's interior formula adds bleed to the height twice but to the width only once, on the outside edge: trim width plus 0.125 inch [5]. A Canva 8.5 x 11 design with bleed comes out 8.75 inches wide, and KDP expects 8.625.
| Trim size | Canva custom size, no bleed | KDP page size with bleed | Canva with its bleed on |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8.5 x 11 in | 8.5 x 11 in | 8.625 x 11.25 in | 8.75 x 11.25 in |
| 8.5 x 8.5 in | 8.5 x 8.5 in | 8.625 x 8.75 in | 8.75 x 8.75 in |
| 8 x 10 in | 8 x 10 in | 8.125 x 10.25 in | 8.25 x 10.25 in |
If a design genuinely needs art to the edge, skip Canva's bleed setting and type KDP's bleed size from the third column in as the custom size instead. Then pick "Bleed" when you upload. The KDP bleed mistakes guide covers what happens when the setting and the file disagree.
Where do the coloring pages come from?
Canva's own coloring page generator works from a picture you upload: "Upload a photo of your kid's birthday cake or adorable dog," and it turns it into printable line art [3]. That suits a book of your pets or your town. For pages from a written idea, you need a general AI image tool, your own drawings, or a generator built for text prompts.
Whichever source you use, each page has to arrive as clean black outlines on white, with no grey shading and no frame around it. Canva won't fix that for you. It places the image you give it. The guide to making a coloring book with AI lists the 7 defects AI pages usually have and how to clean each one before it goes into the layout.
Resolution matters before you import, too. A page has to be 2,550 pixels wide to fill 8.5 inches at 300 DPI. Canva can export a 300 dpi PDF, but it can't add detail an undersized image never had.
How do you lay out a coloring book in Canva?
Use one Canva page per book page: design, blank, design, blank, with front matter at the start. Turn on margins with File, then Settings, then Show margins [1], and size each image to sit inside them. KDP needs art at least 0.25 inch from the top, bottom and outside edges on a no-bleed book [5].
The blank pages matter to buyers. Coloring books are printed on both sides of the paper, and markers bleed through, so every design needs an empty page behind it. In Canva that's a blank page added after each design. KDP is fine with it: its limit is 4 consecutive blank pages at the beginning or middle of the file [4], and you'll only ever have 1.
Two numbers to check before you export:
- Page count. KDP's minimum is 24 pages [6]. 40 designs with blank backs is 80 interior pages before front matter. The page count planner adds front matter for you.
- Inside margin. The gutter grows as the page count goes up, so leave extra room on the binding side of thicker books [5].
Which Canva download settings does KDP accept?
Go to Share, then Download, and choose PDF Print as the file type. Canva describes PDF Print as "for printing with a resolution of 300 dpi," while PDF Standard is 96 dpi [2]. KDP asks for images of at least 300 DPI [6], so PDF Standard is out even though it looks fine on screen.
Then leave the "Crop marks and bleed" checkbox unticked. In Canva, crop marks and bleed come as one combined box on the PDF Print download [1], so you can't have bleed without the marks. KDP's file rules say "Submitted files should not contain crop marks" and "Printer's marks should be disabled" [4]. Tick that box and the interior is built for a print shop, not for KDP.
| Setting | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| File type | PDF Print | 300 dpi; PDF Standard is 96 dpi [2] |
| Crop marks and bleed | Off | KDP rejects crop marks [4]; Canva's bleed doesn't match KDP's interior width anyway |
| Pages | All pages | One PDF for the whole interior |
| Color profile | Leave as is | A pure black and white page has no colour to shift |
Before uploading, run the PDF through the KDP manuscript pre-flight checker and page through KDP's previewer. If KDP still bounces it, the KDP rejection guide maps each rejection message to its cause.
How do you make the cover in Canva?
The cover is a separate file: back cover, spine and front cover as one wide image. Its size depends on your trim and your final page count, so finish the interior first, then get the exact full-cover size and spine width from the KDP size calculator and type that in as a new Canva custom size.
Change the page count after the cover is done and the spine width changes with it, so the cover has to be resized. The same crop-mark rule applies: download as PDF Print without marks. For the design side, the coloring book cover design guide has 6 layouts and a test for whether the title still reads at Amazon's thumbnail size.
Where does Canva stop for a KDP coloring book?
Canva is a good layout tool for a coloring book, and its generator is free. The work it leaves to you is the work that makes a KDP book: keeping 40 pages in one style, adding the blank backs, sizing the interior and cover to KDP rather than to Canva's print defaults, and cleaning every image to print-ready line art.
For a one-off book of your own photos, that's a fair trade. If you're building from a theme and publishing more than once, the Canva vs BookIllustrationAI comparison lays out where each one fits, including what Canva does that this product doesn't.
If you'd rather start from a description than from photos, the AI coloring page generator creates every page in one style at 300 DPI and assembles the KDP interior with the blank backs already in place.
